When looking for pet grooming supplies, most groomers prefer to use all-natural, chemical and cruelty-free pet shampoo. Targeted, 2-1 and concentrated shampoos top the list.

Most dog groomers use all-natural, chemical and cruelty-free conditioners. High-quality conditioners are hydrating, detangling, non-irritating and with natural fragrances.

Some groomers prefer to shampoo dogs prior to grooming to remove debris and tangles which enhances the effectiveness and relaxation of the bath. For a clean start, some groomers shampoo dogs before grooming. Deciding factors are personal preference and the specific situation. 

Use only dog shampoo and conditioner and look for shampoos that are free of fragrances, dyes, parabens, and soaps. If your dog has specific coat issues choose a specially-formulated shampoo such as hypo-allergenic, for puppies, double-coated, short-haired, itchy, dry skin, shedding, and flea and tick.

Choose a mild or condition-specific dog shampoo and wet coat with warm water. Dilute the shampoo and lather into the coat. Rinse thoroughly, repeat. Conditioner should be applied, left on for a few minutes and then rinsed. Be sure to always rinse thoroughly to protect the dog's skin from irritation. Use a washcloth with shampoo to wash a dog’s face and then rinse well with a washcloth and clean water.
